Commemorative ceremony in Sveče

in memory of the national hero Matija Verdnik-Tomaž and his comrades from Sveč

At the cemetery in Sveče/Suetschach, we commemorate the eleven fallen fighters and activists of the Liberation Front who are buried here. Among them is the national hero Matija Verdnik-Tomaž, a key figure in the resistance movement in Rož, as well as the brothers Aleksander and Ivan Čero, other partisans and activists, and three unknown fallen comrades. An imposing stone monument and a large mausoleum bear witness to their courage and sacrifice in the fight against Nazism. Every year on the first Sunday in February, the Carinthian Partisans’ Association organises a commemorative ceremony to highlight the significance of the Slovenian resistance in Carinthia/Kärnten. The event serves as a reminder not to forget and as a call to champion freedom, democracy and the values of the anti-fascist struggle.
